Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited two Otis men for alleged deer hunting violations in Vernon Parish on Oct. 13.
Agents cited John E. Kosik, 25, and Jeffrey Pederson, 51, for possession of illegally taken deer and failing to comply with deer tagging regulations. Kosik was also charged with being over the daily bag limit of deer.
After receiving an anonymous tip about the over harvest of deer, agents began investigating Kosik. Kosik admitted to agents that he killed three antlered deer on Oct. 11 in Vernon Parish. The investigation also revealed that Pederson assisted Kosik by tagging one of the deer that was harvested by Kosik on Oct. 11.
Hunters are allowed to take one antlered or one antlerless deer a day putting Kosik over the daily bag limit by two antlered deer. Agents seized the three deer and donated them to a local charity.
Possession of an illegally taken deer carries a $400 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. Possessing over the daily limit of deer brings a $250 to $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail. Failing to comply with deer tagging regulations carries a $100 to $350 fine and up to 60 days in jail. The men could also face civil restitution totaling $5,282 for the replacement value of the deer.
Agents involved in the case are Senior Agent Derek Ware and Lt. John Volentine.
